Tennis

Pembroke has 4 astroturf (slightly skiddy, but somewhat less than grass) tennis courts available for general use during the winter, and a further 4 grass courts that are opened during the Summer. Any current student can book the courts by asking at the PLodge; this is worth doing, particularly if you want to play in the evening, as the College rents out the courts to a local club on some week nights.

The competitive tennis scene at Pembroke is very relaxed, with Cuppers generally an enjoyable and inclusive affair occurring from mid-Lent to the end of Easter. Teams consist of 6 players, each of whom play a single and a doubles match, making each fixture worth 9 points (6 from singles, 3 from doubles). We have in the past fielded a single women's team and two men's teams. Men & women typically "train" together, and there's a pretty diverse cocktail of competences. This year we'll be looking at setting up a ladder to encourage play during Michaelmas, and exploring the possibility of hiring a coach to run some beginners & intermediate lessons.

If you're interested in playing any tennis (casual or competitive) you should sign up for the pem-tennis list (log on to https://lists.cam.ac.uk/mailman/ and use the 'Search Advertised function). Those interested in playing competitively should also sign up to the team lists (pem-tennis-mens & pem-tennis-womens). These lists allow all players to message the list asking if anybody fancies a game, and are therefore a good way to get some tennis at short notice.

This year the Men's Captain is Archy de Berker (ad545) and the Vice-Captain is Joey Gateshill (jgg33), whilst the women are under the leadership of Jemima Scott (js827). Please do get in contact if you have any questions or fancy a hit!
