2. The Triple Helix: Who Wants to Live Forever?
The Triple Helix Cambridge (www.camtriplehelix.com) presents:
Who wants to Live Forever? Exploring the impact of extreme ageing and the
future of life extension research

"I aim to live forever. So far, so good" - *Anon*
While immortality may currently be beyond the scope of human endeavour, it
is certainly true that life spans are increasing – the number of
centenarians in the UK has risen exponentially in the last century and in
2007 the Office for National Statistics reported that there were more
pensioners than under 16s for the first time ever. The ageing population is
high on the agenda of all governments in the developed world and research
into ageing is increasingly important. As the saying goes, old age comes to
us all; but how soon will that be for our generation?
In the first debate of this year, join our panel of experts chaired by Dr
Richard Faragher (University of Bristol) to explore the impact on
individuals and society of increasing longevity and the future of life
extending medicines and technologies:
- Mr Kenneth Howse – Oxford Institute of Ageing
- Dr Aubrey de Grey – Methuselah Foundation
- Dr Guy Brown – Biochemistry Department, University of Cambridge
- Dr Klaus Okkenhaug – Babraham Institute, Cambridge
Following a short presentation from each speaker, the floor will be open to
you so we invite you to express your questions and views and come ready to
challenge the panel!
Refreshments will be served at the end. We look forward to welcoming you!

3. CU Canoe Club: Come and Try it Day
Sat 11th Oct, between 11am-4pm
Try out canoeing and have barbecue food for free!
Want to try canoeing for free?
Whether you've never tried or done a small amount, you can come and try it
at any time between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 11th Oct. We will be located
near the bridge between Fen Causeway and the Mill Pond, see
http://tinyurl.com/cu-canoe-club for a map.
CUCC members will be there to answer any questions you have about canoeing
or our club, and you can find out just how great canoeing is. We'll have a
free barbecue on site for you to grab a bite to eat, bring some friends and
give it a go!
Things you'll need to bring: Towel, dry warm clothes, clothes you don't
mind getting slightly wet in - eg. a swimming costume with a t-shirt,
fleece layer and track pants. See you there!
We'll also be conducting courses over the term. If interested, do inquire
about it with any of the CUCC members at Freshers' Fair, or email us at
cucanoe-com@srcf.ucam.org to find out more.

4. Cantabrigian Wiki: Help Needed
Remember when you were applying to study here, and the information you
wanted was dotted around and not all that useful? Well, that needs to
be fixed. With a format somewhere between that of an encyclopedia and a
wiki, the purpose of www.cantabrigian.co.uk is to get everything
remotely related to Cambridge in one place. What's more, it shouldn't
be in the stuffy and one-sided tone that the official college and
subject websites are in, rather it should be from the students' point of
view.
So, how can you help? Well check out the site, read through the content
that's on it at the moment. If you find that a page on a topic you know
a bit about is either empty (i.e. the college and subject pages mainly),
missing something, simply incorrect, or even the page doesn't exist at
all, then click the 'contribute' button at the bottom of the page, and
help make this site awesome!
And, just in case you're wondering, CUSU has approved the site, and
we've already had 6000+ unique visitors in these early days. Get on board!

5. McKinsey Co: Mgmnt Consultancy Drinks
Dear Pembroke
Come and join me and some of my McKinsey colleagues for some drinks on
Tuesday 21st October in Pembroke Bar.
I graduated from Pembroke in June 2002, and subsequently done a Masters,
and worked as an economist for 2 years before joining McKinsey's London
Office in August 2006. My experiences over the past 2 years have been
fantastic.
If anyone is interested in finding out about management consultancy and
life at McKinsey I will be in the bar from 19:00 and would love to meet
you.
I look forward to seeing you.
All the best,
Natacha
