1. Ivory Tower Society: "Divine Madness" TODAY
IVORY TOWER SOCIETY MONDAY 12TH MAY 7.45 for 8pm, Nihon Room
Nietzsche: Divine Madness, lead by Sam Cane, from the Fitzwilliam Museum
ABSTRACT "Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright
morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: 'I seek God!
I seek God!'"
There can be few who have not heard these, the opening remarks of a passage
in The Gay Science (1882), much less of their author, German philosopher
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, a figure who has exerted an influence on the
modern mind as tangible and significant as Darwin, Marx or Freud.
The purpose of this seminar is two-fold - to explore Nietzsche's unique and
incomparable impact, not only on contemporary philosophy but on mainstream
popular culture, in particular on music, cinema and fiction; and to
consider whether his notorious proclamation of divine murder is really the
radical scepticism for which it has so often been taken. In reflecting on
these themes, we will encounter a thinker who, in transcending purely
philosophical boundaries, emerges as the quintessential polymath who
rendered nihilism not a destructive force but an uncompromising and
fiercely original vehicle for social and intellectual change.
For a translation of the 'Madman' passage, as reproduced by one of
Nietzsche's foremost translators, Walter Kaufmann, see:

is performing at the West Road Concert Hall at 8pm on Tuesday the 20th May.

the ensemble.

3. Fairtrade Formal
new date: Saturday 17th May 2008
Once again, the
catering department will be serving a delicious menu using fair trade
products wherever possible. Pembroke has spent a great deal of time and
money in becoming the second of only two Cambridge colleges achieving Fair
Trade Status, so please show your support and gratitude by swiping in and
enjoying a yummy meal!
It may be exam term, but a good meal and a couple of hours away from the
books will do you a world of good. And if exams aren't stopping you
drinking, once again I urge you to opt for fair trade wine to accompany the
meal (available from the bar or there's a wide range available from
Sainsbury's/off licences - mostly for very low prices!).
Last term we sold out 100 tickets and left a number of people disappointed,
so swipe in early to ensure your place!
Join the event and invite others at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=15413531441 Look forward to seeing
you there!

4. Scouts Fundraising
cout groups are volunteer run organisations improving the lives of
young people across the world by giving them access to a whole host of
activities and giving them responsibility for themselves and others. We
receive no central funding and other than our members' subs (which we
endeavour to keep low to encourage wider participation) we must
fundraise to raise the necessary funds to continue to run. Here are two
completely free and very easy methods to help us raise funds for two
local groups which Pembroke students help run.
1. Active Kids vouchers from Sainsburys. We all shop there, so why not
get a bit of extra of value from your shopping and pick up the free
Active Kids vouchers you are entitled to for every £10 you spend.
Indeed if you are particularly charming, mention you're helping local
scouts or just smile sweetly the checkout assistants will often give you
extra ones. Each voucher's worth approximately 20p but with over 400
people in college all shopping weekly you can see how this could add
up. There is a bright box in the plodge for your vouchers - don't
forget to ask for them next time you are in Sainsburys! The vouchers
will be split between the groups which Dan (das69) and myself (ejg52)
are attached.
2. Easyfundraising.com. By registering with this website for free (all
you need to give it is your name, e-mail and the cause you are
supporting - here 28th Cambridge Scout Group) and doing your online
shopping at sites such as amazon, eBay or many others by first visiting
easyfundraising you will be able to make a donation of upto 15% of your
purchase value FOR FREE. There are also loads of exclusive offers and
even free donations for trialing sites and/or products for free. What
could be easier. Please register today!
Finally, if anyone is interested in joining the adventure, escaping the
bubble for a couple of hours a week and contributing to the wider life
of the city we live in, feel very free to ask Dan or myself how you can
get involved.
Many thanks,
Ed (ejg52)

5. Fitzwilliam Museum Questionnaire
My name is Helena and I am a fourth year at Pembroke. For my group project
this year I am working for the Fitzwilliam Museum looking at the effect of
charging for temporary exhibitions on visiting habits and perceptions.
I would be extremely grateful if you could fill in this short
questionnaire, you don't need to have visited the Fitz to answer it.
Many thanks,
Helena Jaconelli
