2. Ivory Tower Society: Evolution of Disease Susceptibility
- How Ancient Mosquitoes Can Ruin Your Life
*********FINAL IVORY TOWERS TALK OF THE TERM - NOT TO BE MISSED!***********
"EVOLUTION OF DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY - HOW ANCIENT MOSQUITOES CAN RUIN YOUR
LIFE", PROF KEN SMITH
MONDAY 10TH MARCH, 7.45pm for 8pm, NIHON ROOM, PEMBROKE COLLEGE
This promises to be an excellent discussion by an eminent speaker and it
would be great to have a good crowd to support the last event of term so
come along!
Abstract
Perhaps 25% of people will end up with an autoimmune disease at some point
in their life. These illnesses occur when the immune system turns on the
body, no longer recognizing it as "self" and thus attacking it. Many of
these diseases are common (type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis) or
prominent (multiple sclerosis, lupus). We are all at risk of these
illnesses, and our degree of risk is genetically determined. This genetic
risk is inherited in a complex "polygenic" fashion, rather than in a simple
mendelian one like haemophilia or cystic fibrosis. It results in huge
variation in disease susceptibility between families, and often between
races and ethnic groups.
I will examine the principles behind the inheritance of risk of
autoimmunity, presenting evidence from studies in wild mice in Australia
and Iran and in people from the UK, Hong Kong and Kenya. This suggests that
the evolution of our predisposition to autoimmune disease is all about
mosquitos, but that mosquitos might also be our saviours.

But are wishes that simple? And if a wish is granted, what comes after its
Happily Ever After? In Sondheim's musical masterpiece choices are made and
paths are followed, but these are dangerous Woods, and even familiar
stories can lose their way.
The Woods are waiting…

This year's Black Tie Finalists' Dinner will take place in the striking

Challenge 2008. These teams will go on to write full business plans for
the chance to win £5000 in June to set up their businesses. This highly
prestigious event will be attended by the Cambridge business community
and the most promising young entrepreneurs in Cambridge. Cong Cong Bo,
President of CU Entrepreneurs said, "It will be a showcase and
celebration of emerging entrepreneurial talent and ground-breaking
technology at a world-class university."
The Entrepreneurs' Challenge, a business creation competition that runs
in three phases, has a history of creating world-class high technology
companies. Light Blue Optics, a company producing miniature laser-based
projectors and winner of the competition in 2004, has recently opened
its first US office, having secured $26m of venture capital funding.
Last year's winning team, Cambridge Temperature Concepts, is about to

ovulation, at the end of April. Companies that have emerged from the
