If any captains want me to include their results then just drop me an email.

The rugby team now plays a potentially promotion deciding clash with Trinity Hall this Thursday.

As I am the new president of the Ivory Tower Society was thinking of
increasing talks' attendance from the undergraduate community as well. So,
could you be so kind as to advertise this next talk, to be held this
Tuesday the 24th, starting 7.30 in N7?

Here are the exact details:
Please, feel free to join our very first in this term's exciting series of
talks. A fascinating theme - Unification in Theoretical Physics, given by
Dr D. S. Berman from the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge.

It is a great opportunity to engage in an inter-disciplinary discussion so
I do hope to see as many of you attending. Thank you so much and looking
forward.

Kind regards,

The Ivory Tower Society Committee

3.

Join the Stokes Society on Wednesday 25th January at 9pm in the Nihon Room for this term's first talk.

Hazardous Earth: How our planet is trying to kill us - Ekbal Hussain

Free for members/£1 non-members. Wine and nibbles provided.

The surface of the Earth consists of a finite number of rigid interlocking plates. The internal engine of the Earth which drives all dynamic processes inside the Earth ensures that these plates are constantly moving relative to each other. The model that describes the incessant motion of these plates is the theory of plate tectonics.

All geological hazards on Earth are directly or indirectly a result of the motion of the plates. Over the course of human civilisations millions of lives have been lost due to three of these hazards: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis. These are the killer three. The focus of this talk will be on these three natural events.

Although not the main aim of the talk, I will briefly discuss the mechanisms by which these events occur and why they occur in the places they do. I will concentrate on the effects of these hazards on human populations. How and why people die in earthquakes. Why do people live near volcanoes? The talk will finish with a discusion of how loss of lives can be prevented/limited.

King's Jest

THE EVENT

For those who haven't been before, the King's Jest is a great comedy night held in the Keynes Hall, Kings College, for your delectation. It's been a huge hit in the past and is open to absolutely everyone. The first of our Jests this term will be on Friday 27th January from 9:30-11:00pm featuring Phil Wang as our compere for the evening. It also happens to be wonderfully inexpensive at a frankly excessively reasonable £2 for King's students and £3 for non-members. In short, great comedy, low low prices. Delicious.

THE AUDITIONS

Of course we wouldn't even be a 'we' without the budding, blooming or already-quite-clearly-a-flower comedic talent (...pollen?) which you can provide us with. The Jest is a great opportunity to get a foot in the door of the Cambridge comedy circuit and really good fun even if it's just a one-off. Absolutely NO EXPERIENCE is required: if you have experience, wonderful, if you don't, here's your chance. All you have to do for the audition is prepare a 5-7 minute set of original material of any form. Stand-up, singing, rapping, dancing, whatever. So whether old or new (see flower metaphor above), we'd love to see you at our auditions SATURDAY 21st JANUARY 3-5pm in the MUNBY ROOM, KINGS COLLEGE (second floor of A staircase. Access the staircase on the door immediately to your left before entering King's Bar). Good luck!

with a short presentation on the film’s context, and will be followed by
an informal discussion of the movie.

Film: “Nine Queens” (Nueve Reinas) (2001), Argentina.
“Deliciously twist-filled, Nine Queens is a clever and satisfying crime
caper.”
About the movie: Argentine filmmaker Fabian Bielinsky makes his
directorial debut with this taut crime thriller about a stamp and con
artists on the make. The film opens with low-rent hustler Juan (Gaston
Pauls) trying to scam the workers in a convenience store when Marcos
(Ricardo_Darin) steps in to arrest him. In truth, Marcos is veteran con
himself and the two split the money after fleeing the scene. Soon after,
Marcos asks Juan to be his partner in a series of small-time jobs. When
one of the men gets a message from his sister, the two head to the tony
hotel where she works. There they try to pull off a big con that was
initially planned by an aging criminal too ill to do it. The swindle
centers around a fantastically accurate forgery of a rare stamp called the
Nine Queens. As the two doggedly try to set up the deal, mobsters and the
like learn of the job and try to horn in. This film was screened at the
2001 Toronto Film Festival.

*Volunteers Needed for Watersprite: The Cambridge International Student
Film Festival!*

Hey there!

It's a new year and we are now just about a month away from a fantastic
film-filled getaway in February - Watersprite: The Cambridge International
Student Film Festival! Much is well underway, from getting the most
comfortable venues to screen our jury-selected shorts to snagging coveted
speakers from the industry, to make the Festival 'the student Sundance' and
an experience absolutely not to be forgotten.

But we can't do that alone.

Amid all that hustle and bustle, we need people to help us with the
management of various venues at the event and to extend a warm welcome to
attendees from across the country and beyond. So, why not come along to be
part of the Watersprite experience and join us as a volunteer? :) No
experience is required (we will provide training if there are special
equipment involved) and all we are looking for are people who are enthused
about film, making new friends or just want to have some fun!

If you want to be part of this event reply to ziais@watersprite.org with
your contact details and we'll keep you posted :)

*Asylum and Academia*

*On: Wednesday 25th January*

*At: 7.30pm*

*In: The Latimer Room, Clare College*

* *
In many countries around the world, academics face persecution, war, and
violations of academic freedom. Far from being the end of the story, coming
to the UK to seek safety is often the beginning of a long journey to
rebuild lives, identities, and an academic career.

A refugee academic from Algeria, Latefa, will be coming to Cambridge to
discuss her experiences of fleeing Algeria, of seeking asylum in the UK,
and of trying to integrate into British society and UK university life. Her
research interests include forced migration, mental health and female
academics in the diaspora.

Her story offers a personal insight into the UK asylum process and casts
light on the many challenges faced by academics around the world, and on
those who become refugees in the UK. The event aims to build awareness
about issues relating to academic freedom, refugees, and equal access to
the university.

Calvinism: a dirty word? The Impact of Reformed Theology
on Literature

1pm, 23rd January, 2012, English Faculty GR-05.

The theology of the Reformation, and particularly that of John Calvin,
has left a considerable literary legacy, with many writers grappling
with the ramifications of its more contentious doctrines. Some of them
seem profoundly unattractive: Calvinism seems to strip away any sense of
human freedom, and tend towards an unhealthy introspection. Perhaps you
wonder why anyone would want to believe it?

Come to this seminar (given by a Calvinist!) to investigate and evaluate
the influence this kind of thinking has had on figures such as Marlowe,
Donne, and others, with time for questions afterwards. This should add a
helpful perspective to the questions raised by Part I Paper II, or any
of the Part II papers tackling the considerable influence of this
theological system.

The seminar is given by Rev. Dr. Andrew Cinnamond, an ordained Anglican
minister, whose first degree is in English and whose PhD. focused on
Puritan grievances in Elizabethan England. It's been put on by Christian
English students; do feel free to contact njl47@cam.ac.uk for further
information.
