7. Ivory Tower Society: 'The Physics of Musical Instruments'
Hello,
Remember to come to a really interesting talk this Monday 18th: "THE
PHYSICS OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS" lead by our own Pembroke College Harvard
Scholar, MATTHEW SMITH
Next week brings answers to some of the mystery surrounding our College
Chapel:
PEMBROKE COLLEGE CHAPEL: WHO BUILT IT, AND WHY? DR. BILL GRIMSTONE
ABSTRACT
How did Pembroke come to have two chapels? Matthew Wren, uncle of the
architect, gave the new one, but why? There is a traditional belief that
Pembroke chapel was designed by Christopher Wren and was his first
building, but what is the evidence? Documentation relating to the chapel is
sparse. However, other clues exist and allow the chapel's building history
to be (almost) worked out. This talk will be about the architect(s), the
development and sources of the design, and the craftsmen who worked on the
building. The grotesques will probably be new to you.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Grimstone is a life fellow of Pembroke College. Until retirement he was
a cell biologist, working in the Zoology Department. He has long-standing
interests in architecture and the College's buildings. In 1998 he curated
an exhibition in Pembroke Chapel, which made him realise how little was
known about the building and led to the research he will be talking about.
Both talks are in the Nihon Room, Pembroke College at 8pm, drinks at 7.45pm

Cecile and the demure yet passionate Mme Tourvel while being encouraged by
his former mistress the Marquise de Merteuil who, while seemingly
supportive, has ulterior motives.
The battle between the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont will

10. Sustainable Fish: An Oxymoron?
Real Food Discussion Cafe #3
Date: Monday 18th February 2007
Time: 7pm
Place: King's College Coffee Shop
~ with Elizabeth Tyler (Zoology Dept) ~
You may have noticed that more and more colleges are advertising
'sustainable fish' on their menus. But what does this mean? Why is
fishing unsustainable, and what makes 'sustainable' fish different?
With fish stocks declining at such alarming rates, can any fish
consumption really be sustainable?
If you want to find out more about overfishing - one of today's great
ecological problems - or just to discuss how to navigate the maze of
conflicting issues that is ethical food in day-to-day life - come
along to the third of our discussion cafes. It's a lovely chance to
chill out on the sofas in King's coffee shop of an evening, enjoy free
food and drink (including unlimited tea!) and do your bit for the
environment, all at the same time.
This event is organised by CUSU Ethical Affairs and is part of the
Real Food Campaign. For more information, see
