Would you be interested in earning £4 for 20 mins of your time by taking
part in my language experiment?

It is a simple picture-naming task in which you will be asked to name into a
microphone some pictures that will briefly appear on a computer screen. The
experiment will take place in room 320 of the William Hardy Building,
Downing Site.

My requirements are that you are a native speaker of British English, do not

4. Cambridge Christian Worship Orchestra: Auditions

Cambridge Christian Worship Orchestra (http://ccwo.ttk.org.uk/)

Do you play a musical instrument? Sing? Fancy trying out conducting or
composing? Then the Cambridge Christian Worship orchestra would love to
hear from you!

We are a newly formed inter-denominational Christian Worship group, with
members from both universities across Cambridge. Our aim has been to play
worship music for churches across Cambridge, for services and special
events. We rehearse as and when we have events rather than having weekly
practise, as we appreciate that many people in Cambridge are incredibly
busy!We have played two very successful services so far and this will be
our third event, and we would love to have you involved! Don't worry if you
don't play an orchestral instrument, we welcome violinists to bass
guitarists, baritone horn players to drummers, everyone is really welcome
:)

This, our third event, is taking place on Sunday 10th Feb at Wesley
Methodist Church, Kings Road (near the Grafton centre and Christ's pieces).
We are going to be playing for the 10:30am service, followed by tea and
biscuits in the Refectory, what more could you want?

If you'd like to play then we have two rehearsals this week, both at Wesley
Methodist: Thursday 7.45pm-10pm Saturday 1pm-4pm.

If you think you will be able to come, please try and contact Phil Howie
(musical director) (prh33) to let him know so we have the the right music
ready, but do feel free to just turn up. Bring friends, bring a stand and
come and join in the fun :)

If you have any questions about us and what we do, please feel free to
contact: Phil Howie (MD) prh33 or Eleanor Perkins elp43 or just come along
on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday

5. Student Community Action Cambridge: Battle of the Bands Auditions

Student Community Action Cambridge is on the look out for the best bands
and solo artists Cambridge has to offer for their annual Battle of the
Bands fundraiser. There is a top prize of a day's studio time (worth
£180-200) up for grabs, by kind arrangement of Cambridge recording studio
Zoo Audio (www.zooaudio.co.uk). This is a great opportunity to be seen by a
big crowd and show off your talent! To audition for a place in the final of
this year's competition please email Joe (jb558@cam.ac.uk) for details. All
styles of music are welcome.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Cambridge University Entrepreneurs: £5k Training Event

Cambridge University Entrepreneurs would like to invite you to our £5k
Training Event on Saturday 9th February at 10am in the Judge Business
School. This event will help you maximise your chances of winning £5,000
in our upcoming business plan competition, and everyone is welcome to
attend.

Our talks on marketing, finance and equity will give you the basic
grounding you need to get started, and you will also learn what makes a
winning product and winning team. We will also be joined by one of the
founding members of ARM, who will tell us the story of how a company
that started with 12 engineers in Cambridge became a global standard:
their embedded microprocessors are used in most digital devices on the
planet today.

If, after this Training Event, you enter our £5k Challenge business plan
competition, you will pitch your idea to a panel of judges for a chance
to win £5,000 and the opportunity to turn it into a real business. To
enter, you will need to write an executive summary of up to 3,500 words
and submit it to us by 11.59pm GMT on the 22nd of February, and you can
visit our website at http://www.cue.org.uk for more information.

7. The Pembroke Players Present: ROPE

A play by Patrick Hamilton

London, 1931. Brandon and Granillo, two Cambridge students idling in the
holidays, have come up with the ultimate intellectual pursuit -- murder.
And to provide their plan with a fitting denouement, they host a dinner

out to a chilling conclusion, in this darkly comic 1930s drama by genius
scribe, Patrick Hamilton.

Real Food Discussion Cafe #2:
Local and Organic - Behind the Buzzwords

~ With Roland Randall (Geography Dept and organic farmer) ~

Is local food always more climate-friendly than imported? What exactly
is organic farming, and is it really better for the environment? Is it
practical to only eat seasonally? Just what food choices should the
ethically conscious shopper be making? If you're baffled by buzzwords
and want to learn about and discuss the issues behind sustainable
eating, come along to the second of our discussion cafes. The
atmosphere will be friendly and informal, there'll be free tea and
cake, comfy sofas, and a chance to chat to experts and students alike.

13. Ivory Tower Society: "Emissions constraint: global leadership in
social disruption?"

IVORY TOWER SOCIETY MONDAY 11TH AND 18TH FEBRUARY

Hello,

Remember to come to a great talk this Monday 11th: "Emissions constraint:
global leadership in social disruption?", lead by John Buckley, Renewable
Energy Trade Promoter.

Next Monday Monday 18th February brings another treat with "THE PHYSICS OF
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS" lead by our own Pembroke College Harvard Scholar,
MATTHEW SMITH

Both talks are in the Nihon Room, Pembroke College at 8pm, drinks at 7.45pm

ABSTRACT: Musical instruments provide fascinating and elegant examples of
physics in action. They are among the earliest human inventions, are fairly
common in our daily lives, and seem relatively simple in their construction
and operation. When approached from a physics standpoint, however, one
finds that musical instruments embody many fundamental and intriguing
phenomena that are not otherwise apparent. Demonstrations, audio clips, and
other real-world examples will be used to explore the hidden science of
instrumental music-making in a way that appeals to physicists, musicians,
and non-specialists alike.

BIOGRAPHY: Matt Smith is currently a candidate for the MPhil in Engineering
and is the Harvard Scholar at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He graduated
with a BA in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in June, 2007. His
past research has included several assignments at the NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, CA working on space-based optical systems for
planet detection. He has also worked for Boeing Space and Intelligence
Systems in El Segundo, CA. Next autumn Matt will begin graduate study at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a member of the Space Systems
Lab. He plays viola, the drums, and desperately wants to play the guitar.
