What is LDAP?
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a system which allows users to lookup email addresses of people within a directory, in our case the University of Cambridge Directory. Users can search for email addresses by surname.
How do I use LDAP?
There are two ways to access LDAP:
- Through Hermes
- By logging in to Hermes and selecting the 'Address Book' page on the navigation bar, one can access the LDAP system from within a web browser, searching by surname. Next to each result is the option to Add to your personal address book and Compose a message to that address.
- Through a desktop mail client
- If you are routing your email through a desktop client (Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird etc) then you can set up LDAP to run from within your program, allowing you to search for an address merely by entering a surname into the 'To:' field of a new message. The University Computing Service have an excellent guide to setting up LDAP on your email client.
