4.Companions by Prof. Yorick Wilks (University of Sheffield)
10 Feb, 9pm for 9:15 start
Nihon Room
Free for members, £1 for non-members
Today there are several disparate fields of Artificial Intelligence. COMPANIONS is a project that aims to converge these fields in order to create a system capable of developing a real understanding of an individual -- a system that will talk with them, look at their photos and ultimately learn about and help humans.
The project is an exciting attempt to break new ground and create truly social software. And who knows, Facebook might actually suggest someone you know to add as a friend!
Professor Wilks is professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sheffield and a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute. He matriculated at Pembroke in 1961 and received his PhD from Cambridge in 1968 for his thesis titled "Argument and Proof".
The committee will be taking Prof. Wilks to formal hall beforehand and any is welcome to come and join us (email Rob rab207 if you are coming so we can make sure we sit near you!). Prof. Wilks sounds like he will have lots of interesting stories about Pembroke from years ago - no women around, studying with the likes of Bill Oddy, Eric Idle and John Sulstone, not to mention lots of facinating stories about computing!
Hope to see you there!
Rob

6. A New Kind of Wednesday Night
***HONKYTONK***
///Soul Tree///
WEDNESDAY NIGHTS
Controversial as this may be, there is a new club night on Wednesdays at
Soul Tree. If you are sick of queuing for AGES, in the cold and wet, only
to pay £4 to become drenched in other people's sweat, to be trod on by that
drunk girl's heel, and if listening to exactly the same playlist every week
has got just a little repetitive (I'm talking about Cindies, if you hadn't
guessed) this might be a nice change...
HONKYTONK describe their night as a mix of indie, electro, house and disco.
Strictly NO CHEESE :) Instead, expect to hear:
DAFT PUNK//FRIENDLY FIRES//JUSTICE//SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO//MIIKE SNOW//FAKE
BLOOD//MYSTERY JETS//BLACK KIDS//WHITE LIES//SOULWAX//MR.
OIZO//PHOENIX//PASSION PIT//CALVIN HARRIS//DIZZEE RASCAL//NEW ORDER//KID
SISTER//DAVID BOWIE//VAMPIRE WEEKEND//PENDULUM//FLORENCE AND THE
MACHINE//GOSSIP//KLAXONS//JURASSIC 5//MUSE//MSTRKRFT//CHASE &
STATUS//FUTUREHEADS//HOT CHIP//BLUR//DEPECHE MODE//BOYS
NOIZE//MACCABEES//DIGITALISM//DELPHIC//
I'm selling wristbands every week. They are £2 each and inside you can get
some REALLY good deals on drinks :)
*****************
£1 SHOTS
£2 SPIRIT+MIXER
£1.50 BOTTLES
*****************
So if you fancy an awesome (and very different) Wednesday night find me in
the bar tonight or email me so that I can put you on next weeks guestlist
at fp256@cam.ac.uk.
Hope to see some of you there tonight :)
