1. Happy Holidays!

Dear All,

Congratualtions - we have had one of the most successful Michaelmas' in
terms of Access ever! Thank you - each and every one of you for all your
help. This week I need to give a special warm thank you to: Oli Jones,
Katie Anderson, Emily Hockley, Joe Fitzpatrick, Holly Maguire and
Christian Guyader who all came on the NUS Town Trail - especially
because there was a very poor turnout - THANK YOU GUYS!

If you have expressed an interest in having a shadow next term then you
NEED to have an ENHANCED disclosure CRB check. I will be conducting
these Monday 30th Nov 7-8.30pm and Tuesday 1st Dec 2-3.30pm in the JP.
Please bring along with you one piece of the following ID:
- passsport
- driving licence
- birth certificate
Plus two other forms of ID, possibly including another of the above or a
bank statement, phone bill ... One must have your college address on -
such as a college bill. If in doubt please ask me. If you cannot make
one of these times ket me know and I will direct you to CRB checkers
elsewhere.

If you are a medic or have an Enhanced Disclosure CRB check from the
past two years already (i.e.did the shadowing scheme last year), then
all you need to do is ensure that you bring along the ORIGINAL at one of
these times.

There will be a visit to the Thomas Deacon Academy on Tuesday 8th
December and we need three volunteers to go along - if you are around
please let me know: lm412@cam.ac.uk

Those of you who are staying around after term - you can get free rent
and meals if you offer to help out at interviews. Many have already
signed up to help but more people are needed - if you are around please
let me know - lm412@cam.ac.uk

I hope you have a very restful and enjoyable holiday! If you are at home
- why not pop into your local schools at the same time :)

Much happiness, Laura :)

2. Pembroke Players Freshers Show: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

New Cellars, 24th-28th November, 7.30
Tickets £5/£4 for students

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is Tom Stoppard's hilarious take on
the existences of two minor characters from Hamlet.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern spend their time tossing coins, playing games,
wondering what exactly is the point of it all and whether anything will
ever happen. When things do happen, it is in the form of mad princes,
nigh-on pornographic actors, and pirates, the absurdity of which starts to
make Rosencrantz and Guildenstern realise that rather being lead roles in
their own lives, they may only be minor characters in someone else's.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is Pembroke Players' Freshers'
Mainshow, on in New Cellars from this tuesday. A brilliant play and a
chance to support all the freshers involved, so make sure you come!

Email cem72@cam.ac.uk to reserve your tickets

3. Advent Carol Service

Pembroke's Advent Carol Service is on Monday at 8.30pm in Chapel, followed
by Madeira and mince pies. The Chapel fills up very quickly for this
service, so it is a good idea to get there early. Gowns may be worn but are
not required.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Carols at Pembroke House

Every December, the Choir visits Pembroke House, South London (the College
Mission) to sing a Carol Service. This year it will be on Saturday 5th
December at 6.00pm - and we want lots of supporters to go along! Free coach
with the choir (leaving early afternoon), a look round Pembroke House and
the local area, and buffet, bar and bingo after the service. Back by
midnight. Always a very enjoyable and festive occasion: email
ros23@cam.ac.uk to sign up.

9. SciSoc: Science in an Age of Endarkenment

Prof David Colquhoun FRS
Tuesday, 1st Dec, at 8pm (entry 7:30pm)
followed by a wine reception

We like to consider ourselves in an age of enlightenment where
scientific curiosity is freed from dogmatism, fraud, and petty politics.
But is this anywhere near the truth? Prof David Colquhoun FRS, author of
the popular weblog "Improbable Science", comes to shed some light on the
darker sides of present-day science.

Acupuncture and degrees in Chinese Herbal medicine or management speak
are just a few on Professor Colquhoun's long list of problems with how
science is being sidelined in the media and everyday life. From your
newspaper to the NHS itself—how we can rid the world of bad science?

VENUE: Pharmacology Lecture Theatre, Tennis Court Road
ENTRY: 2£ (free for SciSoc members)
