INTERVIEWS
As always as soon as December hits we will be swamped with nervous
prospective newbies attending interviews and tests here. I need your
help in a number of ways:
- to be about (in the JP etc.) should someone need a friendly face to
talk to
- to invigilate exams
- to escort interviewees to where they need to be
If you are about in Cambridge until Wednesday 16th December PLEASE let
me know - lm412@cam.ac.uk . This requires a maasive team effort so I
need all your help - there is free trough lunch/dinner on the days you
help out!
SHADOWING SCHEME
As always CUSU are running their shadowing scheme over the following
weekends:
Thurs 28th Jan - Sat 30th
Thurs 4th Feb - Sat 6th
Thurs 11th Feb - Sat 13th
If you are interested in having a shadow please contact me. This would
involve taking them to lecture, supervisions, meetings and everything
else that occurs in your daily life. There are also events for them to
do - you are not expected to entertain for 72 hours solid! Last year
Pembroke was one of the worst performing colleges in terms of
volunteers. This year I have fought for LOTS of extra rooms for
shadowees - if you are thinking about taking part please contact me.
NUS TOWN TAKEOVER
Cambridge is to be taken over this THURSDAY 26th NOVEMBER. Pembroke
needs 29 more volunteers to form our number contribution to the amount
of student debt accumulated in Cambridge alone. You only need to be
available for a small part of the afternoon and you have the option of
being in the national press and if we satisfy this target there is a
BIG
prize for all of us. You can bring family and friends along as well -
we
have to show how great Pembroke is by fulfilling our quota of number!
Please let me know if you are interested - lm412@cam.ac.uk
ACCESS GROUP MEETING
The Access Group Meeting will be in N7 at 6pm Monday 23rd. Our special
guest is Dr Caroline Burt, Pembroke Admissions Tutor, who will be
discussing how you can use Access volunteering on your CV, application
forms, in interviews and your references. Please do come along, as
always it will be a great forum for discussion and lots of free snacks.
As always, I cannot express enough gratitude to all of you for all your
contributions to Access work in Pembroke this year - just one last push
now before Christmas!
With much happiness and kind wishes, Laura :)

2. Stokes Soc: the Flow of Information in Meerkat Societies
Culture and Community: the Flow of Information in Meerkat Societies.
By Dr Alex Thornton
Nihon Room, Wed 25th Nov
9pm for 9:15 start
Entry: Members FREE!, non-members £1
Human behaviour is largely moulded and refined in society. People learn
from one another, and the resulting spread of social information plays a
major role in shaping the behaviour of individuals and groups. To what
extent is this true of other species? In this talk, I consider the role of
social information in meerkat societies. I show that information acquired
from their elders plays a critical role in allowing pups to develop
critical life skills and discuss how the spread of information can lead to
local traditions in different meerkat groups.
Email Rob(rab207) if you have any questions.

4. College bill donation scheme - in aid of Campaign for Female
Education
Camfed, the current JPC charity, is an organisation dedicated to fighting
poverty and HIV/AIDS in rural Africa by educating girls and investing in
their economic independence and leadership once they complete school. It
supports girls through primary and secondary education and provides
training in business and peer health education for young women.
The college bill donation scheme makes it easy to donate to Camfed: all you
have to do is fill in a form with the amount you'd like to give, and this
will then be added to your next college bill. Forms will be available in
trough over the next few days, and in your pigeonholes later this week -
just tick the box, sign your name, and return to the Camfed box in the
plodge!
Any amount you can give, however small, will help us all make a huge
difference - if everyone in Pembroke gives just £5, we will raise enough to
send 48 girls to primary school for the next 5 years!
For more information on Camfed, or on the college bill scheme, please email
Anna (apj31)

5. Christmas Formal

7. Stand as Faculty Rep
Are there papers you would like to see taught? Is there anything about your
course you would like to change?
Faculty Reps are the academic equivalent of your college’s JCR and MCR
Presidents. They represent students’ views to your Department or Faculty on
everything that affects students, and actively campaign for change in the
content and teaching of courses. Full training, support and campaigning
resources are available from CUSU, and Reps also have the opportunity to
represent students at even higher levels within CUSU and the University.
There are three Reps - two undergraduate, one graduate - in each Faculty (or
equivalent). Nominations need to be received by your Faculty or Departmental
Secretary.
Nominations close: Tues 24 Nov | Elections: Tues 01 Dec
For more information, contact your Faculty or Departmental Secretary, or get
in touch with CUSU Education Officer Sam Wakeford: education@cusu.cam.ac.uk

8. IndieSoc: Open Mic @ Pembroke
IndieSoc will be celebrating the end of term by having an Open Mic Night
on Wednesday 2nd December in Pembroke New Cellars.
We are still looking for performers, so if you would like to play for
5-15minutes, please email me (ldlb2) by Friday 27th.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Pembroke Players: Freshers' Show - Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are
Dead
New Cellars, 24th-28th November, 7.30
Tickets £5/£4 for students
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is Tom Stoppard's hilarious take on
the existences of two minor characters from Hamlet.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern spend their time tossing coins, playing games,
wondering what exactly is the point of it all and whether anything will
ever happen. When things do happen, it is in the form of mad princes,
nigh-on pornographic actors, and pirates, the absurdity of which starts to
make Rosencrantz and Guildenstern realise that rather being lead roles in
their own lives, they may only be minor characters in someone else's.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is Pembroke Players' Freshers'
Mainshow, on in New Cellars from this tuesday. A brilliant play and a
chance to support all the freshers involved, so make sure you come!
Email cem72@cam.ac.uk to reserve your tickets

10. ITS: The Global Food Crisis of 2008
'The Global Food Crisis of 2008 - Causes, Consequences, and What We're
Doing to Make Sure it Happens Again, Soon'. The Ivory Tower Society is
lucky to have Pembroke GP member Dan Kim giving this talk based on his
presentation at the World Trade Organization in August, 2008. The
talk explores the reality of the highly distorted international
agriculture market, what has been done to fix it by the WTO, and how
their efforts have contributed to make agriculture a more volatile
market. Mainstream explanations for the rapidly rising food prices
have focused on the increasing demand for agriculture products.
Economics and politics combine to explain the crisis, and we are
nowhere near solving the problems.
Speaker: Mr. Dan Kim
Location: Outer Parlour, Pembroke College
Time: 7:45pm for 8pm on Monday November 23rd
We hope that you will be able to join us for what should be an
excellent lecture and opportunity for discussion. Visit
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/ivorytower/ for details.

11. TTH: Are we alone in the universe?
23 Nov (Mon), 7.30pm
McCrum Lecture Theatre, Bene't Street, behind The Eagle pub
FREE ENTRY
A panel debate that asks: Do aliens really exist? What might they look
like? And how might science and society react if we found them?
Biologists and astronomers are now using sophisticated techniques to
analyse exoplanets and hints for extraterrestrial life. Do the aliens of
literature, art and film have a basis in science? What do biologists
really think aliens look like?

12. Help produce the Times Top 100 Employers
Your Chance to Earn £75!!! Working with High Fliers to help produce the
Time Top 100 Graduate Employer books.
You will be required to interview 30 fellow finalist students (they can
be your friends) about their job applications and what they plan to do
next year. The interviews have to all be completed in the space of one
week (12-19th February).
You will be given a question booklet for yourself and 30 identical
answer sheets, one for each person you interview.
Interviews do not necessarily have to be done 1 on 1 but if not then in
small groups – maximum 5 people. You will have to ask the questions and
get the people you are interviewing to fill in their answers on the
multiple choice answer sheets provided. Each interview (if done
separately) should probably only take about 5 minutes. At the end of
the week all 30 answer sheets will need to be given back to me and the
£75 will go straight into your bank account.
