*Info*
Hi, I've just become the college CUSAFE rep, and I'm trying to get a
scheme started in Pembroke. CUSAFE is a charity which raises money for
various educational charities in Southern Africa, e.g. Cecily's Fund,
which provides education for around 10,000 HIV/AIDS orphans in Zambia;
you can find more information on the website, www.srcf.ucam.org/cusafe.
I'm looking for anyone who's interested in getting involved in
fundraising - it wouldn't be a huge commitment, there aren't any regular
meetings, it's just a case of thinking up ideas for fundraising events
and then organising them! Please let me know if you're interested and
I'll arrange a time when we can all meet each other and start discussing
some ideas!
Anna Judson (apj31)

There's a new society in the university dedicated to the promotion and
practice of Capoeira. Capoeira is commonly referred to as a martial art
from Brazil, but in truth it is so much more than this. It is a unique
Brazilian art that combines elements of dance, fight, music and game.
It is great fun to take part in, beautiful to watch and gets you very,
very fit.
The society is part of Capoeira Senzala, founded in Rio in Brazil in
the 1960s and led by Mestre Gato who regularly visits to teach in
Cambridge and who's son, Pedro Gatuno (who has over 20 years experience
of capoeira himself) currently teaches the Cambridge group.
The university society has classes on Sundays from 2.30pm until 4pm at
City Life House near the Grafton Centre. A map to the venue as well as
a lot of information about classes, the group and capoeira in general
is available at
alternatively get in touch with me by email jhf32@cam.ac.uk
Cheers,
Jim Fowler

*************"THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE"**********
A Discussion led by Miss Tiffany Greene
Monday 5th November 8pm talk, drinks at 7.30pm, New Cellars, Pembroke
College
Come along to the Ivory Tower Society this week for an excellent and
extremely relevant discussion and find out how nature could change your
life!
Can owning a goldfish really make you a happier person? Do views of nature
while in prison really reduce repeat offences? When you think of somewhere
relaxing and calming, is it somewhere natural? Ever wondered why so many
people escape the city on the weekends? Until very recently in our
evolutionary history, humans had constant contact with nature. Studies from
around the world confirm that interaction with nature (plants, animals,
landscapes and wilderness) notably affects our physical and emotional
well-being. This talk will discuss theories surrounding our innate
connectedness to nature, and how nature based therapy is being applied in
multiple forms in the Western World.
Tiffany is a world travelling Aussie, who is currently calling Cambridge
home. She has travelled to 44 countries, many in the developing world. Her
travels have instilled a strong interest in all things 'global', which has
culminated in the study of several degrees in the Humanities field. She
grew up on a farm and has a passion for all things natural. She is
currently researching the potential use of nature as method of improving
psychological and emotional well-being in post-conflict and reconstruction
communities.
