1. Congratulations - A wonderful example

Lovely Pembrokians,

As always an update of all the brilliances facing Pembroke this week
and
next.

_Visits this week_ -
MON 16th NOV - 8am - 3.30pm VISIT to Caroline Chrisholm School,
Northants followed by Magdalen College School, Brackley.
WEDS 18th NOV - 11am - 2.30pm AIMHIGHER Luton Schools (11 of them!) are
visiting St Cats but due to the large intake (11 schools!) we need all
your help.
Please let me know if you are free (lm412@cam.ac.uk) - as always
massive
appreciation and free lunch! Plus halfway to a free formal.

_Stash
_I will be ordering our Access Hoodies in the coming week. They should
cost you about £16, will have your name on and can be _*any*_ colour
you
desire. Please let me know by Saturday 21st November if you want one
(and what colour, what you want the back to say and what sixe you will
need S, M, L).

_Access Group Meeting
_It was brilliant to see so many of you when Andy McGowan came to speak
In a follow up email Andy said /"I don't want this to sound patronising but
it has to be said - Just want to finish by saying with my CUSU hat on
that you should be really proud of what you've got going at Pembroke, I
was really impressed with the turn-out and how it is organised in terms
of guest speakers and with regular school visits/visits out to schools,
so congratulations on everything that's going on there - is definitely
an example other colleges could follow!"/
The neXt Access Group Meeting will be on *Monday 23rd November *@ *6pm
*in N7. Dr Caroline Burt (our Admissions Tutor) will be coming to tell
you all how great you are and how you can use Access work on your CV,
application forms, in interviews and how she will write references for
you.
_
NUS Debt Recovery Town Takeover
_As you may know the Government is planning to increase our student
fees, adding more ot the crippling debt that students already face.
Because of this NUS are conducting 'town takeovers' across the country
in big University towns (they have already done successful ones in
Oxford, Manchester, York and are working towards London). There will be
HUGE amounts of publicity during the town takeover of Cambridge on
*THURSDAY 26th NOVEMBER. *This is what I need you to do:

* Wear red on that day

* Take part in the parade. At 2pm we will be joining a University
Procession as they come past Pembroke College. After joining the
massive group and collecting a few more colleges we will be
gathering on Kings College Lawns. When on the lawns we (Pembroke
volunteers) will stand and arrange ourselves to spell out the
amount of debt that an average student will incur. There will be
photos (including an aerial view!) of this and you will be in the
national press. For us to spell out our number correctly I need at
LEAST *30 *people (more is preferable)!

Please let me know ASAP (lm412@cam.ac.uk) if you would like to be
one of these - and encourage your friends, families (college and
home!) and teachers! There is a prize (possibly an event with free
food & drink) for the college which contributes the most amount of
people to their number.

As always with many thanks to all of you. Please acknowledge the praise
- "you should be really proud", you are setting "an example other
colleges could follow". I am definitely very proud of us.

With much happiness, Laura :)

2. Ivory Tower Society: The Global Financial Crisis

What caused the global financial crises? Are we now witnessing the
'green shoots of recovery'? What steps can be taken to ensure such
crises don't happen again? Is free market theory fundamentally flawed?

Come and hear Dr. Demosthenes Tambakis, a former IMF economist and
current fellow at Pembroke College, explain his views on these and
other pressing questions facing our global economy.

Speaker: Dr. Demosthenes Tambakis
Location: Nihon Room, Pembroke College
Date: Monday November 16th, 8pm

As with all Ivory Tower talks, we encourage debate and audience
interaction. This a great chance to learn about modern economics from
one of its foremost practitioners. Email Simon Schlachter (ss678) with
questions and visit http://www.srcf.ucam.org/ivorytower/ for more
information.

3. Music Downloads Survey - win £20

Just complete the short survey at this address and enter a £20 prize
draw:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/202062/investigating-music-downloads-and-in...

I am a 3rd year writing my dissertation on the effects of music
downloads
and music streaming in the UK on the music industry and I need as many
responses to the survey as possible!

There are only 20 questions and they are all very easy - the whole
survey
should take less than 3 minutes to complete. I will be really grateful
to
everyone who can spare just a little time to answer the questions.

Join the facebook group if you want to find out a little more about the
research and see some summary results when the survey is completed.
Please
invite all your friends who are aged 16-30 in the UK to complete the
survey
too as the more responses there are, the better.

The facebook group is:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=176079061485&ref=mf

Please do take the time to complete it and please invite your friends to
do
the same! Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

4. SciSoc: Dr Sheldrake on Morphic Resonance

Dr. Rupert Sheldrake: Morphic Resonance, Collective Memory and The
Habits of Nature
A SciSoc Talk

Tue 17th November 8pm
Pharmacology Lecture Theatre
Followed by a Wine Reception
When can we dismiss a scientific theory? Where is the turning point from
revolutionary science, to pseudoscience?

Dr. Rupert Sheldrake's unorthodox theory of Morphic Resonance, which
surveys the role of telepathy, collective memory and paranormal
cognition in behaviourial science, has been subject to broad derison and
denegation. The Cambridge University Scientific Society invites you to
challenge your own perception of scientific endeavor: Is Dr. Sheldrake's
"New Science of Life" truely a flawed charade, or victim of the mindset
of an inertial scientific community?

Make your own opinion in the most controversial SciSoc talk of the term!
And bring a good question or two.

Entry fee £2 (free for members)

6. CU International Development Soc: The Age of Stupid

8.30 pm Monday 16th November
Queens' Building, Emmanuel College, free entry

Attend an Indie screening of the critically acclaimed docu-film
starring Pete Postlethwaite about climate change and what we must do
to prevent irreversible damage and a world of problems. Screened in 8
parliaments, breaking numerous world records including being premiered
from the Amazon Rainforest and a melting Himalyan Glacier, the 'Age of
Stupid' must be watched by anyone interested in climate change,
development and the Copenhagen conference this December. Ultimately,
climate change could irreversibly change the world as we know it- it
is humanity's greatest challenge.

**** The New York Times "The film is a scorching appeal for humans to
avoid knowingly up-ending the earth's climate"

**** The Sunday Times "Its 2055. Mankind has been jeopardised by
environmental catastrophe, and nobody can understand how the previous
generation - that's us - could have been dumb enough to let this
happen. So, what can we do now to avert this fate?"
