4. Introduction to Pembroke House
This Wednesday: Drinks, Free Supper and an Introduction to Pembroke
House
Pembroke House is the College's affiliated social action centre in
Walworth, a deprived area of South London. Founded by undergraduates in
the
1880s, in September it reopened after a £1.5 million refurbishment. It
operates a variety of projects, including an Academy of Music, a Youth
Centre, facilities and groups for the elderly, St Christopher's Church,
and
"Young Visions" (promoting further and higher education).
Come along to the Old Library on Wednesday evening for wine, a
complimentary cooked supper, to mingle with friends and to find out
more
about this important part of College life from members of staff in
Walworth. We'll be welcoming Father Andrew Moughtin-Mumby (one of the
clergy on the staff), Mr Aydin Djemal (the Centre Manager) and Mr Wayne
Marshall (director of the "Young Visions" project). Email ros23 for
more
info, or if you know you'll be going (but feel free to just turn up!)

6. The Berry: articles wanted
The Berry, Cambridge's termly, predominantly political newspaper, is
currently looking for articles for its Michaelmas issue.
The new editorial team has decided to refashion the structure of the
paper, and we're now accepting a bigger variety of articles. Options
for the interested:
1. If you feel strongly about a hot political issue and you want
your opinion to be heard, submit a punchy comment for us.
(Please avoid commenting on Cambridge politics; this is covered
exhaustively by Varsity and TCS.)
2. If you've read an interesting non-fiction book (popular science
being preferred to philosophical exegesis), and you want to say
why it was good/where it failed, submit a short book review for
us.
3. If you've gathered some interesting political/social
observations over the holidays (e.g. by volunteering in Africa;
in a New York internship, or by a job in summer camp), submit an
investigative report, or simply a short story of your
experience.
All articles should be 600-800 words long; deadline for submissions
is 20 September. Pieces to be published are naturally subject to
selection. Potential contributors please contact Sona on
su227@cam.ac.uk with ideas on what you want to write about. If you're
keen on writing for The Berry but don't know what on, please contact
me anyways, and we'll suggest a topic.

7. St Edmund's College Chapel Choir
Would you like to sing in a Chapel Choir, without a heavy time
commitment? We are a friendly, informal choir looking for more singers
for all voice parts - there are no auditions! No experience is needed,
but it's helpful if you can read music.
We have a rehearsal on Wednesday, 8 - 9.30pm, and sing for Sunday
morning mass, meeting at 9.45am for a rehearsal beforehand. We also
sing for occasional other services and events, in particular the Advent
Carol Service at the end of Michaelmas term.
If you're interested in joining, please come along to the first
rehearsal on Wed 7th October, 8pm, in St Edmund's College Chapel.
If you can't make that, please come along to one of our later rehearsals
(it would be helpful if you could email me in that case)
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

9. Careers: flexjex.com
flexjex.com is all about helping students to find summer placements,
internships and short-term work. We also cater to graduates who want to go
into freelancing, especially in high-tech companies like those around
Cambridge.
We've started this because our experience studying engineering (at
Peterhouse) and on a post-grad course at the Institute for Manufacture
taught us a couple of things:
1. That students sometimes want to have interesting work for the summers,
and that it can be a really interesting way of choosing what to do after
Tripos (I found out I didn't want to be a civil engineer this way ) But
that there had to be a way to MAKE IT EASIER for undergrads to post their
skills and contact employers.
2. That high-street employment agencies DON'T UNDERSTAND at all what a
student can offer, even if only on a 2 week placement. This typically means
that if you walk into an agency in Cambridge or at home you end up either
not being considered, or being offered some useless filing job.
flexjex.com is different - it's just for people like you. We let you post
your profile (incl. CV) online and bid on projects which employers have
posted for free. You bid with your preferred day-rate, but don't worry,
there's a guide price to get you started!

10. Second Year Law students: Dinner with Herbert Smith LLP
Herbert Smith LLP will be hosting a number of joint college dinners in
November for second year law students.
They had some very positive feedback from the dinners we held last year
with many students commenting on how enjoyable it was to meet with
representatives from Herbert Smith and gain an insight into working in a
city law firm.
They re proposing to hold our dinners across two weeks from 2nd to 13th
November (please note we will not be hosting dinners on Friday 6th or
13th). They hope to combine 2/3 colleges at each dinner, depending on
numbers.
If you are interested, contact David Newgas (dn271) and I'll put you in
touch.
