1. take pride and have confidence in yourself
Dearest beautiful people of Pembroke,
I hope you are all taking a little time out of hard revising to remember
just how lucky, intelligent and wonderful you all are. If you are
unconvinced then let me share some comments from this weeks Access
visits with you -
"This place is AMAZING", "It's really nice that everyone here is so
friendly", "Thank goodness I came to visit today, otherwise I would
never have applied and would have definitely missed out"
And from a very impressed teacher - "I've been on innumerable open days
and this is by far one of the best".
We must give massive thanks to *JOANNE PERRY*, *BEN GALLOP*, *ANNA
JUDSON* and *OLIVER JONES* for their help with the visits this week
which inspired the above comments.
A huge congratulations goes to *CATHERINE AINSWORTH* who is our Access
Volunteer of the Week. Not only did she travel to schools county wide
spreading the word about Pembroke, she is the first person to volunteer
for any visit with a smile and lots of giggles. Have a look on our
Access board by the JP to see Catherine and the rest of you in action :)
I am sure that by now you are all desperate to become part of this
circle of fun, praise and happiness so here's what you need to do -
1. Log on to http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/prospective/target/volunteers/
CUSU have set up a Target Schools system whereby everyone is encouraged
to visit schools in their area and show the students just how lovely you
are and how amazing Pembroke/Cambridge/University is. If you sign up to
the database on this website you can place your name next to your
school/ones nearby that you have or could visit. DON'T BE AFRAID if you
are not a regular helper or feel like this is too daunting. Firstly, I
will come with you if you would like. Secondly, I will give you all the
materials/briefings/chat you will ever need in preparation. More
importantly, this is a competition. The college who has the most
students sign up to the database wins a prize (a very good trip to be
enjoyed by you all). We all know that Pembroke is the BEST - so lets
show everyone else!
2. We have a visit on *TUESDAY 5TH MAY* from Holywells School in
Suffolk. If you are available at any time from 11:30 onwards please let
me know. The kids will need a tour around college, taking through trough
(that's right - a free meal for you!) and help with activities.
3. Please please please sign up to be a student ambassador for the
Access Summer School. So many students come to Cambridge after having
been on this scheme - it's a great thing to be a part of! Let me know if
you're interested.
As days pass by and exams draw closer it is easy to feel low. We all
need to remember to have confidence and pride in ourselves. We have all
been chosen to be here for a reason. You ARE intelligent, you will get
through and better than that you will do so with the support, love and
encouragement of the wonderful friends around you. Pembroke is one of
the most popular colleges in Cambridge, students apply after seeing all
of you in and around college. So many of you have already made such a
difference to peoples lives by being inspiring them to apply here. You
don't have to be a tour guide to do that, you could just be that
smiling, happy-looking person walking past. That is something for us all
to be proud about.
With much love & happiness,
Laura :)

2. International food formal - MEXICAN FOOD!
Hello everyone!
The first international food night at Pembroke is coming up! Pembroke's
chiefs will prepare for us Mexican delicacies on Tuesday 5TH OF MAY (Cinco
de Mayo), the day that has come to be seen around the world as a
celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
You can see it as a way to try out exotic flavours, as a special dinner
with your friends, or even just as a 2 hours study break.
The formal is of course open to everyone, internationals and non. The
booking procedure is the same as usual and the price is £7 for Pembroke
students and £10.70 for guests.
Hope to see many of you there!
Hasta luego! :)

3. UN Global Survey on Sustainable Lifestyles
The UN Environment Program have asked CUSU to organise the participation
of at least 100 Cambridge University students in this survey, aimed at
exploring young adults' perceptions on sustainable lifestyles and obtain
inputs to help in the design of policies which take cultural differences
into consideration.
Fill in the online survey (and get more info) at www.unep.fr/gssl
IMPORTANT : the first question - "How did you first find out about this
survey?" should be answered with "Cambridge University", to help
identify our sample when extracting results.
A huge thank-you from the Ethical Affairs team!

4. RE: Varsity Sexism
Women shouldn't haveto walk home with a friend or carry rape alarms.
Women shouldn't have to be held accountable for being outside at night.
That's why tonight - Sunday 3rd of May - there will be a RECLAIM THE NIGHT MARCH. Feminists and women are marching in solidarity through the streets of Cambridge starting at 8.30 from Parkers Piece to Kings Chapel where there is to be a 9.15 vigil. WOMEN UNITE, TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!

9. Triple Helix: "Rethinking the Realities of the Spotless Mind" Rescheduled
EVENT POSTPONED - NEW DATE
The Triple Helix Cambridge and the Gonville & Caius Film Society present:
******************************
"Rethinking the Realities of the Spotless Mind"
Monday 11th May 2009, 7pm
Bateman Auditorium, Gonville & Caius College
FREE ENTRY
If you could erase someone from your mind, would you? Is it presently
even possible to do this? When first released, Michel Gondry and Charlie
Kaufman's critically-acclaimed 2004 film, "Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind", sparked popular interest in memory reconsolidation and
its applications. It also raised questions on how neuropsychiatry could
potentially change the way we view ourselves and our minds.
Dr Amy Milton from the Department of Experimental Psychology and
Behavioural & Clinical Neuroscience Institute, University of Cambridge
will be discussing her research interests in this area. Her brief talk
will be followed by the screening of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind". An informal Q&A session will be held after the event, over
refreshments.
We look forward to welcoming you!
