1. Spreading Joy and Happiness
Dearest friendly folk of Pembroke,
Welcome back! I hope you had an amazing Easter!
First of all, a MASSIVE thank you and congratulations to *EDDY FLOWER*
who is Pembroke's Access Volunteer of the Vacation. Staff who worked
with Eddy on the Cambridge University Science Festival described him as
"indispensable" and "an utter star". Please have a look on the JPC
Access Board to see Eddy in action and maybe your faces too! There'll be
a present waiting in Eddy's pidge to show just how much we appreciate
his work.
This week has also been really busy with visits from schools and my
first adventure out with the Access Bus. We managed to get around
schools in Bedford and Peterborough and it was a day of great fun
enjoyed by all. A HUGE thank you to ELLIE WHEELER, CATHERINE AINSWORTH,
JOE FITZPATRICK and our driver JACK TAVENER. Feedback from the schools
is great and the schools will be returning to visit Pembroke soon.
I NEED VOLUNTEERS - We have 30 Year 10 students coming from various
schools in Great Yarmouth this Tuesday (28th April) and I need people to
sit with them while they eat their lunch between 12.30-1.30 and give
them a tour of college. This is the perfect break from revision with a
guaranteed feeling of good for the rest of the week. Please let me know
if you can help with this!
A wise man said to me recently that us students are heroes and idols to
the students who visit and are desperate to come here. Remember that -
this term may be more stressful than most, but you are all fantastic
people who are making a true difference to peoples lives.
With best wishes, love and happiness,
Laura :)

2. Green Initiatives at Trough
The start of the Easter term has seen the introduction of some brand new
green initiatives in Trough. The water machine will fill a bottle with
filtered sparkling or still water, 20p covers maintenance costs and for
the expensive filters.
Also new this term is an incentive to bring your own mug! 10p off the
coffee price, they'll even wash it for you, return it to a shelf for the
next time you need that coffee break. You could even donate a mug!
The final point of note is the creation of the Environmentally Friendly
Catering of the University of Cambridge (EFCCAM) Facebook group. The
group is open to suggestions on how you think catering could improve. The
link is

Join and have your say.

an opportunity to apply for an internship in India at the British School in
New Delhi. Two places are available to Cambridge students. Further
information and application instructions are available on the
Cambridge-India website at:

5. Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal: Summer Teaching
Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal are a student-run charity that sends 14
volunteers each summer to teach in Nepal. Recently a number of spaces in
the charity have become available. Each teaching placement lasts for 6
weeks in one of our three schools. You will either live in the Children's
Peach Home (orphanage) or with the Headmaster of the school. You will teach
in the school during the day and in the evenings and weekends you have time
to do what you want. Most volunteers use this time to run games for the
children or to take part in the Nepali prayers and dancing. We encourage
volunteers to travel round the country as it's a once in a lifetime place
to visit. You can enjoy trekking around Everest or track rhinos in the
national parks or take part in Buddhist prayers. Nepal is a truly
spectacular country. Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal is a student-run charity
so there are no administration fees.
More information is available at
http://sites.google.com/site/cambridgevolunteersinnepal/ or by emailing
teachinnepal@googlemail.com . Go to the website to find the application
form. The deadline for applications is Friday 1st May.

6. CU Yachting
Need a break from term time stress, or are you looking for an awesome
and cheap holiday this summer? Why not give sailing a go? No prior
experience required.
This summer our very own club Yacht will be sailing round the amazing
Baltic sea. Come one of our many trips this summer and experience
exploring islands, having barbecues on the beach, partying late into the
night and soaking up the culture in the land of the midnight sun!
Escape from Cambridge during term and spend a weekend cruising around
the coast line of England, or for the more adventurous, cross the north
sea to Belgium.
We also offer dinghy sailing at grafham water, a reservoir not far from
Cambridge with trips going out most weeks. All skill-levels, including
beginners, welcome.
Come and find out more at the CUCrC squash 7:30 - 9:30 on Sunday 26th
April in the Green Room in Caius. Or come to our summer launch party 7
- 10, Thursday 30th April, upstairs in the Maypole. Alternatively
check out our website at www.cuy.org.uk.
