How To: Manage Your Mailing Lists

What are the mailing lists?

Mailing lists allow someone to send an email to a single address, which is then forwarded to everybody subscribed to that list. An example is pem-ug@lists.cam.ac.uk (to which all current Pembroke undergraduates should opt in!). Lists are wonderful in that they allow easy dissemination of information to a group of people, whose email addresses you may or may not know. Mailing list management is done through the website lists.cam.ac.uk.

How do I control which lists I am part of?

The most common route for people to subscribe or unsubscribe from the mailing list is through the list moderator. The list moderator can add people to the list easily using the Mass Subscription functionality, which is available under the Admin page, a link to which appears beside those lists on lists.cam.ac.uk to which you have administrative privileges.

The easiest way to control your lists, however, is to do it yourself. You can subscribe and unsubscribe to lists via lists.cam.ac.uk. You will be prompted to log in via Raven and, once you have done so, will be presented with a list of lists (!) of which you are a member. By clicking on the relevant list, you can find information on how to post to the list, unsubscription options, and an archive of posts to the list. There are also options for changing your identification within the list (making your name visible or invisible to the list moderator) as well as the ability to turn on digest mode. There are a myriad of other options, each well explained in situ.

I'm getting too many emails from the list!

Your best option here is to turn on the aforementioned digest mode. This can be done by clicking on the relevant list and selecting Unsubscribe or edit options. Scrolling down, you will find the power to turn on or off digest mode. Digest mode means that emails are sent to you in bundles; rather than receiving multiple emails in a day, they will be grouped together in a single email to reduce email volume.
